Do I have a Slab Leak?

Today we will be discussing what signs you can look for to help you decide if you have a Slab Leak. If you are not quite sure exactly what that is, please check out our recent blog “What is a Slab Leak”.

Water: Have you noticed that your water bill reflects increased water usage, while at the same time your water pressure seems to have dropped?

Hot Water: Are you running out of hot water sooner? Is your hot water heater working harder than ever to keep up with your family’s needs? That is going to increase your energy bills, water bills, and put a heavy strain on your hot water heater.

Floors: A leak in the foundation of your home means that moisture is going to need to escape, and that usually means upward. You may begin to notice damp carpet or hard flooring beginning to show signs of warping.
Smell: Unwanted dampness in our home is going to create mold and mildew. It may not always be easily seen, but the “nose knows.” If your once fresh smelling home is now changing,  a slab leak could be the cause.

Test for a Slab Leak

An unplanned home expense is not something any of us welcome. There is a simple test that can help you decide if calling us for a professional estimate should be your next step.

  1. Turn off all the appliances that use water in your home.
  2. Locate your water meter. It is usually in the ground near the driveway or curb in a concrete box.
  3. Remove the lid carefully, you may need to use a screwdriver to pry it open.
  4. Now the important part. Write down the current reading and then return after 30 minutes. Those numbers should be exactly the same, since your water has been turned off.

If they have changed, then return to your home and take another look to make sure you have not forgotten something, or a family member has not interfered with your experiment. Return to the water meter and check the numbers again, if they continue to change … you have a water leak.
