How to Fix a Broken Toilet Handle

Broken Toilet HandleOur toilet handle is a simple, yet oh so important mechanism that we rely on to work effortlessly day in and day out. It will last an incredibly long time, but there may come a day that it needs to suddenly be replaced before you need a new toilet. Happily, this is one of the simplest things to fix.

Before going to your local home improvement store, take a moment to lift the lid off of the toilet tank. Now take a photo of both inside and out. You probably won’t need it, but if this is one of your first ventures into simple plumbing tasks, you want to make sure you know exactly what type of handle you are replacing if asked.

Now that you’ve made one of the most affordable purchases for a home project, let’s get started! Place the tank lid somewhere safe and out of the way. Turn off the water to the toilet and then flush. The tank will stay empty and give you a dry space to work in.

Loosen the mounting nut that attaches the handle to the inside of the toilet tank. You will notice that these tend to be reverse threaded (clockwise to remove).

Screw the new flush handle into place and reattach the chain. Turn the water back on and give it a try.

If everything seems to be working correctly, replace the lid and let your family know the bathroom is back in business.
